The rectors of the universities of A Coruña, Julio Abalde, and Vigo, Manuel Reigosa, along with Aldaba’s head, Enrique Fernández, signed the renewal of the Aldaba Wib Chair agreement on Monday: Women, ICT & Business, an initiative that began in October 2019, aims to promote women’s participation in the ICT field by creating role models to spark girls’ and young women’s interest in technology careers.
The signing of the agreement was attended by the coordinators of the Chair at both universities: Virginia Mato, professor at the Faculty of Computer Science of the Universidade da Coruña, and Alma Gómez, professor at the Higher School of Computer Engineering of the Universidade de Vigo.
The inter-university chair has two affiliated centers: the Faculty of Computer Science on the A Coruña Campus and the Higher School of Computer Engineering on the Ourense Campus, with both centers collaborating in the implementation of the various activities carried out.
In addition to promoting ICT degrees among secondary school girls, the main strategic lines also include contributing to the high-level training of future FIC-UDC and ESEI-UVigo graduates thru activities that familiarize students with the needs and possibilities of ICT use in companies, as well as facilitating their integration into the workforce.
Among the various activities launched by the chair, one can mention the video produced by the School of Computer Engineering at the Ourense Campus, in which Professor Alma Gómez explains, in an engaging and straightforward manner—and addressing girls in particular—the opportunities offered by computer engineering careers and the reasons to pursue this degree.
